Top Ten Tuesday: Best. Sequels. Ever.

Top Ten Tuesday is a bookish meme run by The Broke and The Bookish. Each week they give us a title for a list and we give them some answers!

Check out this week's Top Ten after the jump!

This week's Top Ten is...

 Top Ten Best Sequels Ever

Queen of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner (The Queen's Thief #2)
In the second book in Megan Whalen Turner's quadrilogy, the story gets more complex and intriguing, and you never know what's around the corner. Absolutely brilliant.

Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins (The Hunger Games #2)
The story gets bigger and better and Katniss becomes an even bigger pawn, in an even bigger game. Can't wait for the film!

The Subtle Knife by Philip Pullman (His Dark Materials #2)
We love Will. You beautiful, tortured boy. Will is one of those brilliant characters who starts off thinking that they're nothing, but throughout The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass, you see him grow and develop and become a man. That's what YA is about.

Froi of the Exiles by Melina Marchetta (Lumatere Chronicles #2)
After the events of Finnikin of the Rock, it's hard to believe you could learn to love Froi. Grudgingly respect him maybe, hope he doesn't die a terrible painful death perhaps. Love him? No. But then Melina Marchetta does what she does best. You should never have doubted her.

The Ask and the Answer by Patrick Ness (Chaos Walking #2)
If you haven't yet read Patrick Ness' Chaos Walking trilogy then get on it! Now! The first book, The Knife of Never Letting Go is brilliant, but the story gets even better in the second one.

The Body at the Tower by Y. S. Lee (The Agency #2)
This is the second in a really intriguing series about a Victorian lady spy called Mary Quinn. There's mystery, a cute romance, and atmospheric descriptions of Victorian London. Sorry, did I mention it's about LADY SPIES?!

Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas (Throne of Glass #2)
We have a post coming up where we fangirl about this book, the second in Sarah J. Maas' Throne of Glass series. It's so good that I'm not sure we include any real words in our reaction to it.

Storm of Swords by G.R.R. Martin (Game of Thrones #3)
AAAAAAAAAAAAARGH. That is all.

Fire by Kristin Cashore (Graceling Realm #2)
When you first start reading Fire, the second in the Graceling Realm trilogy, you get very confused. There are no characters in common and the country it's set in is completely different; instead of people being gifted with Graces, there are strange animals with otherworldly coloured fur and a taste for blood. Once you get over the confusion though, you're swept away by the story of Fire, a 'monster' who doesn't want to live up to her name. Plus it's technically a prequel, standalone-y book but nevermind!

The Piper's Son by Melina Marchetta (Companion to Saving Francesca)
Ok so it's no secret that we LOVE Melina Marchetta. This is the second book of hers in this list after all. But seriously guys, The Piper's Son is AMAZING. It follows Thomas Mackee, a character from Saving Francesca, and his aunt Georgie. A lot has changed in Tom's life since Saving Francesca, but revisiting these characters feels like coming home. Sometimes I (Caroline) pick it up and start at a random page, just to live in that world for a little longer.

  1. I haven't read any of these, so I don't know for sure, but my general opinion is that first is best.

Here's my list of best sequels ever.

    1. Wow, so do you just generally avoid series or does it just mean that the first one has to be REALLY good before you read it? What about companion novels? Sorry for all the questions, I'm just very intrigued because series are such a big part of YA.
